Tritone substitution

Reharmonizing a melody

Description

This video will learn you the secret of the harmonic substitution, allowing you to modify an original harmonic progression, and reharmonize your favorite melodies.
Starting from a simple chord progresion in C major, using three chords: D minor7, G dominant7 and C major7, we keep in place the D minor7 and C major7 chords of the progression, and replace the dominant chord seventh chord G7 by a new dominant seventh chord located an augmented fourth above or below: Db7.
We realize that the simple act of inserting this new chord gives the melody a new color, a different light.
The chord substitution is required when the original harmonic progresion is too poor or badly harmonized, in order to enrich it.
