How to alter the basic chords of jazz and perform the chord inversions. Any chord can be reversed by moving its lowest note to the top or bottom octave. A seventh chord thus has one root position (In the form of successive thirds) and three inversions: The major seventh chord in root position, first inversion, second inversion and finally third inversion. The minor seventh chord in root position, first inversion, second inversion and third inversion. The dominant seventh chord in root position, first inversion, second inversion and third inversion. The half diminished seventh chord in root position, first inversion, second inversion and third inversion. The diminished seventh chord in root position, first inversion, second inversion and third inversion. The notes of a chord can be voiced following three positions: in thirds, in fourths or in clusters (successive seconds). For the major seventh chord: - in thirds with the ninth. - In fourths, three possibilities: on the third degree (E), on the seventh degree (B) or on the sixth degree (A). - The cluster will be built on the seventh degree (B). With minor seventh chord: - in Thirds, with the ninth. - In fourths, three possibilities: on the first degree (C) on the fourth degree (F) or on the third degree (Eb). - The cluster will be built on the seventh degree (Bb). For the dominant seventh chord: - on the Third, with the ninth. - In fourths, two possibilities: on the third degree (E) or on the seventh degree (Bb). - The cluster will be built on the Seventh degree (Bb). For the half diminished seventh chord: - in Thirds, with the ninth. - In fourths, one possibility: on the diminished fifth (Gb). - The cluster will be built on the fourth degree (F). Finally, for the diminished seventh chord: - in Thirds, and with the ninth. - In fourths, one possibility: on the the third degree (Eb). - The cluster will be built on the third degree also (Eb).
