This video shows you the way to play a rhythmic syncopation, a rhythm played on a weak or weak part of a beat, and sustained towards a strong beat or strong part of a beat. Here are some examples of syncopation in a simple measure: In the first example, the two cental quarter notes are linked together. The second quarter note is not repeated and a half note is obtained. In the second example, two eighth notes are linked to two other eighth notes. The third eighth note is not repeated and we obtain the rhythm: eighth note - quarter note - eighth note (a two beat syncopation). In the third example, we have four sixteenth notes where the two central notes are linked together, the third sixteenth note is not repeated, and we obtain: sixteenth note - eighth note - a syncopation over two beats. In the last example, there are two eighth notes linked to a quarter note. the quarter note is not repeated, and we obtain: eighth note - dotted quarter note, a syncopation within a beat. The principle of syncopation is the same for the compound measures. In the first example, the two quarter notes are linked together, the third dotted quarter note is not repeated and we obtain a dotted half note. In the second example, the eighth note of the first beat is linked to the eighth note on the second beat, which is not repeated. We obtain a ternary syncopation. In the third example, we have a group of six sixteenth notes where the second and third notes, then the fourth and fifth notes are linked together. The third and fifth sixteenth notes are not repeated and we obtain: sixteenth note - eighth note - eighth note - sixteenth note. In the following example, we find the rhythm: 4 sixteenth notes + 1 eighth note. The second and third sixteenth note are linked together and the third sixteenth note is not repeated. We obtain the following rhythm: sixteenth note - eighth note - sixteenth note - eighth note. In the rhythm: 1 eighth note + 4 sixteenth notes, the second and third sixteenth notes are linked together. The third sixteenth note is not repeated and we obtain: eighth note - sixteenth note - eighth note - sixteenth note.
